Design Technology: Aluminium Casting

Some of Year 7 had a particularly exciting Technology lesson today, casting shapes from aluminium.

Over the last few weeks, the students have used computer aided design software to create a shape of their choosing, which is then cut out of wood using our laser cutter. They have then learnt about using hand tools, such as planes, to tidy up their wooden shape. An impression of the shape is then made in a sand mould. Then it was the particularly exciting bit as Mrs Carson and Mr Lee, in fetching safety gear, cast the shape out of liquid aluminium. The students then get to keep their cast shape.

All of Year 7 will get a chance to do this as the syllabus is rotated during the year.
